Paul Gilbert

An innovative leader in the area of the management and growth of public, private, and non-profit organizations.

​

As Executive Director of NOVA Park, Gilbert helped the agency implement a stream of innovations that resulted in enterprise revenues more than doubling and a great expansion of parkland. Under his leadership, NOVA Parks was able to generate substantial funds from natural resources banking. From internal catering to climbing structures, creative aquatic theming, and light shows, and more, NOVA Parks became a leading park agency in the area of enterprise operations, while it grew and protected natural resources. Gilbert led acquisition efforts resulting in 16 new parks and the expansion of numerous existing parks.

As Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust, Gilbert was able to create public/private partnerships and greatly expand revenues and conserved land.

​

Paul Gilbert is an author of several books on leadership and management, and is Executive in Residence for the Recreation Management Program at George Mason University.

​

Gilbert has won the Cornelius Pugsley Medal for conservation of public parkland from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), the Founders Award from Virginia's United Land Trusts (VaULT), the Freedom Fund Award from the Fairfax Branch of the NAACP, the Appreciation Award from the Korean American Cultural Committee (KACC), and numerous other recognitions and awards.

Gilbert holds a Master's Degree from George Mason University, a Certificate in Leadership from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Certificate in Business Sustainability from Cornell University.

Natural Resource Banking

Our expertise in natural resource banking includes carbon and wetland banking practices, nutrient banking, and more. Healthy natural systems are the answer to most of our environmental issues today. When done well, these methods can be a win/win. They improve the natural systems on a property, and they offset impacts. Gilbert understands the public sector and has worked closely with mitigation companies to find solutions and shepherd the process to successful completion.
